We recognize all families who come through our doors are dealing with trauma from a medical diagnosis and subsequent hospitalizations, surgeries, treatments and loss. We also recognize trauma affects the entire family and can manifest itself in different ways, from nightmares and heightened irritability to loss of interest and increased fear. We work to create a safe space for children and families who have experienced medical trauma by using the 4 Rs: Realize, Recognize, Respond and Resist retraumatizing.
Our staff and volunteers are trained to understand and respond to the medical trauma children may experience. This allows our team to reinforce a feeling of love and belonging while addressing the underlying cause of a child’s behavior. It also helps our team recognize a child’s needs may be different from planned programming and allows them the opportunity to provide a choice that better addresses that child’s needs in that moment.
