As Associate Director, Melissa is responsible for day-to-day operations, leading volunteer coordination with university and business partners and overseeing community outreach opportunities. Melissa has a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University and has spent her entire career doing absolutely nothing in that area. She and her husband Matt have given the world two adorable children, Claire (8) and Kaleb (6), their greatest accomplishments to date. In 2009 her daughter was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma. By the grace of God, the research of Dr. Sholler at the NMTRC, and through the amazing care of Dr. Mitchell at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, Claire is now officially on the other side of her diagnosis and declared cancer free- Praise God!
Through her daughters cancer journey, Melissa developed a passion for helping families experiencing a childhood illness. Melissa feels blessed to be able to use her life experiences and heart to give back to this community of families during the most trying times of their lives. Working at the Children’s Healing Center is an honor and she cannot wait to welcome the kiddos and their families.
Melissa is a proud 2015 fantasy football champion and sad but hopeful Lions fan. She is a history buff that loves watching Antiques Road Show, doing jigsaw Puzzles, and reading to excess under her heated blanket. Melissa has begun learning to crochet, thus officially becoming a 90 year old in a 35(ish) year olds body.
